Mike -
So enjoyed your recent article in R&R! I took much away from it and plan to share it with my staff here at SuperSpots.
I believe we are being 'remarkable" for inventing how AC stations brand themselves on TV with our 'Rebecca @ Work" concept and also how we have imaged Christmas with "Snowglobe" over the past 3 years. It took guts to re-invent SuperSpots and we are seeing the benefits roll in - we'd love to be included in your "Remarkable Radio" mentions -
Best!

Hello Mike,
I enjoyed reading your article, “Be Remarkable,” in the June 23 R&R. It has always amazed me how such little things people do for each other, whether professionally or personally, can turn into such big impressions. Sometimes, as with the story I’m about to tell you, the benefit turns out to be the opposite of what might be expected.
Not long ago a woman called me with an unusual request. Her boss was about to celebrate her 75th birthday. She went on to say this woman loves to listen to me every morning on Newsradio 710 WPMI and often comes into work in the morning talking about something I talked about on the air that morning. Then she asked if I would show up, unannounced, at a special birthday luncheon she had planned for this 75 year old woman. I said I would.
On the day of the luncheon I was a little apprehensive because I really did not know what to expect. I had never been the “surprise celebrity guest” at a birthday party before. I grabbed a station coffee mug, which features a caricature of my face, signed it, and put it in a gift bag and headed to Zia’s.
Mike, it was as if someone like George Clooney walked up to this woman’s table and introduced himself. I know I’m very well known here after 30-plus years on the air in Mobile but may have forgotten that some people, for whatever reason, still enjoy meeting people like me. This woman turned out to be a very lovely, very sharp, very personable 75 year old business owner who was obviously very excited I was standing at her table introducing myself, wishing her a happy birthday, and handing her a small gift. I posed for pictures with her, we talked about several things during lunch, and had a wonderful time. It was even more fun to learn her son is an old friend of mine.
When lunch was over she looked at me and said I made her day. That may be true but in so many ways she made mine. It could not have turned out any better. Had I not shown up this lady would still tune me in every morning. As for the woman who asked me to come, I hear from her almost every day and she now listens to Newsradio 710 every morning.
It was the easiest thing I did that day but, far and away, the most significant. It was just a simple gesture but very much appreciated by someone I would have, otherwise, never met. I left very happy I accepted the invitation. The bigger impression was the one this woman made on me!
It was just a little thing, but as a friend of mine likes to say, “If you take care of the little things, the big things take care of themselves.”
Happy Independence Day Weekend. I’ll look forward to seeing you next time you’re in Mobile.
