The hardscrabble life of Rockwell’s most illustrated Boy Scout, next door neighbor, and close friend, James A. “Buddy” Edgerton, and the famous illustrator…an unlikely friendship …a look behind the canvas…
America’s love affair with Norman Rockwell continues, as evidenced by the 15-page spread in Vanity Fair’s November issue and the Smithsonian Institute’s recent announcement of a major exhibition from the private Rockwell art collections of none other than the directorial dynamic duo, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas – who both credit Norman Rockwell as their inspiration for filmmaking. The exhibition, “Telling Stories: Norman Rockwell from the Collections of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg,” is underwritten by Booz Allen, because “Rockwell’s themes of love of country, personal honor, and the value of family and friendship align well with Booz Allen Hamilton’s mission and values.” At a time in our country when these themes are even more crucial, more relevant, comes a book that sheds intimate insights into the man who inspired Rockwell who, in turn, inspired the world.
The Unknown Rockwell: A Portrait Of Two American Families will be launched from the Norman Rockwell Museum on Thursday, October 8, 2009. At that time, a previously unknown Rockwell portrait that has been in Edgerton’s family for almost sixty years - a bereavement gift from Rockwell himself - will be unveiled publicly for the first time and will remain on loan to the Norman Rockwell Museum.
“I must say that you have written this in such a way that makes it impossible to set the book down for any length of time. You have captured in writing what Rockwell did on canvas, a story that all can visualize and relate to…I am left without words…” – Tim Kavanagh, Television Host, WCAX
“A charming and absorbing narrative of New England farm life in the mid-20th century, a way of life that has largely vanished…” The Berkshire Eagle
“Buddy Edgerton's memoir offers a compelling glimpse of Norman Rockwell’s Arlington…a warm reflection on the lives and times of beloved neighbors and friends who were immortalized in Rockwell’s art. We are honored to host the launch of Buddy Edgerton's personal narrative, and to share it with what will surely be an appreciative public."- Stephanie Plunkett, Deputy Director and Chief Curator of Norman Rockwell Museum.
“The Unknown Rockwell: A Portrait of Two Families will create for you a wonderful warm feeling. It’s intimate and loaded with moments we can all treasure." – from the Foreword, Dick Clark, Television Producer and Media Legend
