The Internet Overtakes Radio
It looks like online ad sales have surpassed radio's share of ad budgets for the first time. TNS Media says the Web received 7.6% of marketing budgets last year, compared to 7.2% for radio. Figures are based on network, national spot advertising, as well as 34 large and medium markets. TNS data shows online gains have come at the expense of not just radio, but also newspapers, which saw its share fall 1.1% to 17.7%. National TV still gets nearly one-third of all media spending.

Off-Air Advertising Mutes Radio's Declines
Radio had its first down year since 2001 as total revenue slipped 2% last year to $21.310 billion. Off-air dollars were the biggest gainer, increasing 10% to $1.7 billion. Those dollars, which include things like website and mobile phone advertising, now account for 8% of radio's revenue. But it's radio's staple spot sales that were the weakest. Local ad revenues fell 2% last year. National was off 6%.

Online Listening Chart 4.8 Billion Listening Hours In '07
Music radio online (live streaming channels and individual track plays) generated 4.85 billion total listening hours in 2007, up 26.1% over 2006, according to a new research report by AccuStream iMedia Research. Total listening hours averaged 404.2 million hours per month (excluding downloaded music), compared to a 320.5 million hour average in 2006, including leading music subscription services such as Napster, Yahoo Music and Rhapsody.

Auto advertising shows promise for radio...
And that growth is more likely to come online, where automaker marketing budgets are rapidly growing. Interep's Morrison and Abraham president Sue Novicki says "There's still a lot of money left to be had" for radio. Even though 2007 was a "very tough" year for the auto industry, radio saw more car dollars than in 2006. Novicki says a common theme she's hearing from car companies: "Every one of them is looking for an integrated marketing program."

Your 2008 Plan: New Rules for a New Media Landscape
This may be a new record, even for a consultant! McVay Media's Holland Cooke attended FOUR conventions in ONE week. First, the NAB Radio Show and co-located R&R Convention in Charlotte. Then the 3rd annual Podcast & New Media Expo in California. Then, Las Vegas, for the Electronic Retailers' Association conference...AN INFOMERCIAL CONVENTION. "The-order-in-which these shows occurred could not have been better," Cooke observed. "The conversation went from on-air to online to marrying-the-two, and suggests a specific, 6-point Business Plan for radio stations in 2008." While HC feverishly deciphers his notes into the next level of detail, he outlines those 6 points in this PDF.
