From Media Business Report... 2006 was not a great year for the record industry. Album-length CD sales were down for most types of music.
According to Nielsen SoundScan, only four genres were up in sales for the year: Classical, Soundtracks, Latin and Christian/Gospel. The largest of those is Christian/Gospel, which accounts for 6.75% of album sales. "2006 was a good year for Christian/Gospel music. Album sales were up, albeit slightly; digital sales continue to rise and most importantly, the impact of the Gospel through music reached beyond even what our sales reveal.
Everywhere you look, in books, games, TV and movies, music that is inspired by faith seems more prevalent than ever before.
"There may be many reasons why this is true, but I think chief among them is that people seem to be drawn to the inspiring and compassionate message of Gospel music amid uncertain times," said John W. Styll, President and CEO of the Gospel Music Association (GMA).
Most of the artists from the list of top-selling Christian/Gospel albums of 2006 may not be familiar to mainstream radio listeners, but Country fans will certainly recognize the guy who had the #1 Christian/Gospel album of 2006. "Precious Moments" by Alan Jackson was far and away the best seller of the year.
