Ring tones are hot. How hot? About one-half of mobile phone owners between the ages 12 and 24 have downloaded ring tones. Older phone owners appear to be happy with preloaded tones. Your CHR or Hot AC station should have access to ring tones from your web site. How? Keep reading!
With a sample size of 670 people nationwide, a new study from Ipsos-Insight shows that fully 52% of those ages 12 to 17 who have a cell phone said they had downloaded a ring tone, and just under 50% of 18 to 24 year-olds were also down loaders.
The percentage drops to 30% for those between the ages of 25 and 35, and lower still among older users. Matt Kleinschmit, a vice president with Ipsos-Insight, says ring tone downloads could signal wider music downloading in the future. “An important component in this emerging content space is the presence of an existing billing relationship with the consumer, thus providing a significant advantage over PC-based content delivery methods, where cumbersome registration and payment processes can discourage impulse purchases.”
According to a survey by M:Metrics, downloading ring tones was the fourth most popular mobile content activity performed by US mobile subscribers, behind text messaging, Web surfing for news and information, and using personal e-mail. Just under 10% of respondents reported having downloaded ring tones in June.
While ring tones are a popular type of downloadable content, more advanced entertainment possibilities like ringbacks, full songs, short video clips and music videos are still downloaded by a very small percentage of mobile phone users.
So, how do you get a button on your website so that your listeners can get ring tones from you? Go through a provider, like www.mobile.banananetwork.com or www.jamster.com, Or, simply “Google” the term “Ring Tones.”
