As the new year begins, it’s a great American tradition to make a list of resolutions for the New Year. Welcoming 2009 will be no different. The purpose of this exercise is to recognize those areas of your life that could stand a change for the better, in the great American tradition of self-improvement. Herewith, a sampling of some of the resolutions most Program and Promotion Directors might wish to consider.
• I will return all my phone calls and answer my mail, within the same month whenever possible.
• I will make talent a priority and will “pay attention” to them when I meet with them.
• I’ll stop checking my Black Berry during meetings and only between courses at dinner.
• I will listen to account executives explain their client’s idea for a promotion all the way through to the end … before bursting out in either tears or laugher.
• I will do those dopey things the General Manager sometimes asks for, even though I know they’re a waste of time, without grumbling or contemplating the effect of sugar in the gas tank of her/his BMW.
• I will go beyond the obvious when I write promotion copy. I will try to BE CREATIVE again.
• I will never use the phrase “and more” to end a sentence in a promotional announcement.
• I will not stop my search for a good idea with the first suggestion, no matter how promising it sounds.
• I will proofread all copy and then have someone else who is skillful in grammar, punctuation and spelling proofread it again. Oh, and I will use spell-check.
• I will clean up my office, at least quarterly. No more being a pack-rat.
• I will take the production people out to lunch several times a year and tell them what great job they’re doing.
• I will have my nervous breakdown on my own time.
• I will remember that life goes on and that I deserve a vacation.
• I will think about something besides radio at least one hour a week.
HAPPY NEW YEAR! HERE’S TO A GREAT 2009!!!
