Following Daniel Anstandig's account of a mind-bending conversation with a fellow airline passenger from a well-known toilet paper company, letters have been flying in!
Daniel:
Good article!..jocks have got to become personalities and lead people, expose people, teach people about music?..a lot of work to be done.
As an industry we need to make sure we give the listeners what they can't get anywhere else..they have got feel as if they are missing something if they don't tune in....was a study recently conducted by Arb/Edison that concluded people tune into a station for the following reasons:
89% said they want to listen to someone who makes them think...was the number one reason....not sure our personalities do a good enough job getting our listeners to think and learn.....in an age where there is good music everywhere, we have got to provide our listeners with tidbits about the music they are listening to....I.e. "That was tumbling
Dice by the stones off their Exile album...remeber Stevie Wonder opened for them on the Exile tour......our personalities have got to become musicologists....

Daniel-
Bravo my friend! Excellent article in R&R.
Talent- that has something to say and can connect with the listener will always have a home in mass-comm. The delivery system does not matter- the content matters.

Hey Daniel:
Just reading your radio vs. toilet paper piece – and sharing the statistics you mention regarding usage of radio and TP. The one question that came to my mind – and with virtually every other person I’ve shared this with – if only 89% of US population uses TP – what does the other 11% do?
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Take care!

You really offered to send TP jokes? I would love to see ‘em (hear ‘em).
But even more intriguing to me – has your Toilet Paper Friend ever gotten a pitch from ChickChat Radio? Oh we could talk toilets, toilet paper, bathrooms for EVER. He’s welcome to sponsor a segment. Or an integrated campaign. We use it at least 4 times during a two hour show – talk about product placement!!! And we can restore his faith in radio advertising and creativity. I know it!!!!

Daniel,
That R&R article was great and the attitude you conveyed is exactly what people in our business need to see, hear and feel. As for the elusive 11% of non-tp users, you have to wonder a little. Mainstream press has certainly done a great job of painting terrestrial radio as being the horse and buggy in an automotive world.
